Carbon Steel Bolts Specification
This specification covers the chemical and mechanical requirements for three grades (Grades A, B, and C) of carbon steel bolts and studs in specified sizes. This specification does not cover the requirements for machine screws, thread cutting/forming screws, mechanical expansion anchors, or other similar externally threaded fasteners. When tested, sampled specimens shall adhere to specified values for chemical composition, hardness, tensile strength, yield point, elongation, and dimensions.
This specification2 covers the chemical and mechanical requirements of two grades of carbon steel bolts and studs in sizes 1/4 in. through 4 in. The fasteners are designated by “Grade” denoting tensile strength and intended use.

Scope
ASTM A307 is the standard specification for carbon steel bolts, studs, and threaded rods of 60000 PSI tensile strength in sizes from ¼ inch to 4 inches in diameter. A307 bolts from Riton Metal Industries and Associates are available in two grades, A and B, offering different mechanical and chemical properties for specific applications.
These bolts are designed, manufactured and tested to comply with the standards set by ASTM A307 for chemical composition, hardness, tensile strength, yield point, elongation, and dimensional accuracy.
Grades
- Grade A – headed bolts, threaded rods and bent bolts with a minimum tensile strength of 60 ksi for a wide range of general-purpose applications.
- Grade B - heavy hex bolts and studs with a tensile strength of 60 to 100 ksi for flanged joints in piping systems with cast iron flanges.

Carbon steel grades of steel are generally used in manufacturing low carbon steel bolts and nuts mentioned above in the above standards, gradesupto 6.8 are in non heat treated condition whereas bolts from 8.8 and above are heat treated to provide them with extra strength. Sometimes steel additions like Chromium and molubednum are added in the steel to provide the correct stregnth required as per high tensile grades.
